The Player, the Avatar and the Protocol

What if consciousness is fundamental, as Thomas Campbell proposes in My Big TOE? HSP can then be read as a model of the human information-processing layer through which an individual perceives, predicts, activates and acts.

That is not an additional HSP premise. It is a test: can Human System Protocol™ fit logically inside such a larger model without losing its own boundaries?

Perhaps HSP does not describe consciousness itself. Perhaps it describes part of the interface consciousness has to operate through when being human.

First, the boundary

HSP is not a theory of consciousness, and it does not need to become one.

Human System Protocol™ describes behavioral dynamics: how input is detected, given meaning, turned into prediction, routed through learned system logic, translated into activation and resource allocation, and ultimately into available output and choice space.

Thomas Campbell goes much further in My Big TOE. He proposes a consciousness-first model in which consciousness is fundamental, physical reality functions as a virtual reality, and individual units of consciousness participate through avatars.

This article treats that model as a serious hypothesis in development — not as established HSP science and not as something you have to believe in order to use HSP.

The question here is not: “Has My Big TOE been proven?” The question is: “If this architecture is broadly right, where would HSP fit?”

What My Big TOE proposes

The larger stack

In My Big TOE, Campbell describes a Larger Consciousness System: a larger consciousness system that, in his model, forms the fundamental information system behind reality.

He calls individual parts of it Individuated Units of Consciousness — IUOCs. The individual unit is the player. The human body is the avatar. Physical reality is the environment in which that avatar operates.

The player receives a data stream, interprets experience and makes choices within what Campbell calls decision space: the possibilities that are available or recognizable to that player at that moment.

The avatar is not unlimited. The virtual reality has a ruleset. The avatar has properties, biological constraints and capabilities that determine what can be done inside that environment.

If you place HSP one layer lower

Where the protocol begins

Inside such a model, HSP does not have to explain where consciousness comes from, what the larger reality is or why a virtual reality would exist.

HSP can remain much more local.

In this reading, HSP is not the theory of the player. HSP describes the protocol of the human interface through which the player reaches behavior in this environment.

The avatar is not a neutral remote control

Constraints are part of the system

If consciousness is the player, it does not follow that the player can freely choose what the avatar does at every moment.

A human avatar has its own system conditions: nervous system, hormones, sleep, pain, available energy, attention, memory, learned predictions and automatic protective routes.

That is exactly why HSP treats system constraints as important.

The question is not only which choice theoretically exists. The question is which choice the system can make operationally available.

Potential choice is not the same as accessible choice.

Three kinds of rules

Ruleset, factory settings and learned logic

Campbell's ruleset and HSP's operating rules are not the same thing. That distinction is useful.

HSP operates mainly at the second and third layers and explores how they produce behavior under real conditions.

Decision space and HSP choice space

The strongest bridge

One of the most interesting connections with My Big TOE is Campbell's concept of decision space.

Decision space concerns the choices available to an individual unit of consciousness. More possibilities may objectively exist, but if they are not available as possibilities to the player, they do not function as current choices.

HSP's choice space is close to that idea, but zooms in on human processing.

HSP asks why that space is wide at one moment and collapses at another.

This creates a practical distinction:

Ten good options may exist. If your system can make only two of them available under pressure, your operational choice space is two.

Free will would not mean: free access at all times

Agency under conditions

A consciousness-first model can place free will at the center. HSP adds an important human constraint: agency has to pass through a current system state.

You can rationally know that you want to stay calm and still become defensive. You can know that “no” is a legitimate answer and still experience saying no as unsafe. You can know three alternatives and lose access to all three during high activation.

That does not automatically mean choice does not exist. It means that access to choice can be condition-dependent.

Why behavior can start before deliberate choice

Pre-choice output

A player does not have to manually control every detail of an avatar.

The human system often detects, predicts, activates and allocates resources faster than deliberate reflection. Heart rate may rise. Attention may narrow. An old defensive sentence may already be available before someone consciously decided to become defensive.

This fits HSP's distinction between automatic output at low choice space and more deliberate behavior when enough capacity remains available.

And it does not turn responsibility into an excuse.

“My system did this automatically” may explain behavior. It does not remove the possibility that impact, repair and improving future system conditions are yours to address.

The Translation Layer as an interface decoder

From experience to system process

People usually do not directly experience their underlying system architecture.

They say:

  • “I suddenly became someone else.”
  • “I knew what to do, but I couldn't do it.”
  • “I immediately felt attacked.”
  • “I just wanted to leave.”

The HSP Translation Layer translates such statements back into possible system processes: input, meaning, prediction, activation, resource allocation, choice space, output function and feedback.

If Campbell's larger model ever turns out to be substantially right, that gets an interesting additional meaning.

The Translation Layer would not translate consciousness itself. It would help read what happens in the human interface between received experience and produced output.

Where My Big TOE and HSP meet — and where they do not

HSP therefore does not automatically validate Campbell's claims about quantum physics, remote viewing, healing or other parts of his larger theory.

It does not need to.

The interesting connection is architectural: information, processing, rules, constraints, choice space, output and feedback.

Why the comparison remains useful even if Campbell is wrong

HSP still stands

A useful framework does not have to depend on one ontology.

If consciousness ultimately turns out to emerge from biological processes, HSP can still describe how a human system processes input and produces behavior.

If consciousness turns out to be fundamental and the human indeed functions as an avatar inside a larger information architecture, HSP can still describe the same local layer.

That is what makes HSP interesting:

HSP does not need to decide what consciousness ultimately is in order to usefully describe what happens between experience and behavior.

For this thought experiment, assume consciousness is fundamental, individual units of consciousness are players, and the human body is a constrained avatar inside a larger information environment.

A logical place for HSP then appears.

Not as a Theory of Everything. Not as proof for My Big TOE. Not as a theory of what consciousness is.

But as a model of the operational human layer:
